SquareLab x Nutrioo: The Story of an Entrepreneurial Project Dedicated to Zoological Nutrition

The Open Incubator SquareLab is proud to support passionate entrepreneurs in transforming their ideas into success. In this interview, discover the inspiring journey of Flore Viallard, founder of Nutrioo—an innovative initiative dedicated to zoological nutrition that contributes to species’ well-being. Through her testimony, dive into the world of scientific entrepreneurship and the challenges faced in serving the animal cause.

A 2021 graduate of VetAgro Sup with a degree in agricultural engineering, Flore Viallard launched Nutrioo, a consulting firm specializing in animal nutrition. The company supports zoological institutions and animal industry professionals in developing tailored feeding programs that meet species-specific needs while promoting local agricultural resources.

SquareLab x Nutrioo (Flore Viallard) - Clermont School of Business
Can you briefly explain your project?

I founded Nutrioo in 2021 after earning my agricultural engineering degree at VetAgro Sup. Nutrioo is a consulting and training firm specializing in animal nutrition. It primarily serves zoological institutions and professionals in the animal industry committed to conservation efforts. Through Nutrioo, we work closely with zoological teams to design feeding plans that meet the specific nutritional needs of each species. We consider the operational constraints of zoological parks while promoting local agricultural resources.

Additionally, our training division is growing rapidly, offering both in-person and online courses. These programs cater to a diverse audience, including professionals, students, and enthusiasts who want to deepen their knowledge on a key aspect of animal well-being.

What motivated you to launch this project?

During my engineering studies, I knew I wanted to work for the animal cause and conservation while maintaining a scientific approach.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I discovered zoological nutrition through an Erasmus virtual exchange program. This experience allowed me to connect with researchers and zoological park managers, which was a true revelation.

At the time, I was convinced I would never start my own business. I thought, “No way—if someone wants me, they’ll hire me!” However, after several internships in zoological parks, working on herbivore and primate nutrition, I realized how much I enjoyed advising, training, and moving from park to park.

A conversation with a park director changed everything. He opened my eyes to the world of entrepreneurship and its possibilities. Soon after, my inbox was flooded with short-term contract offers in zoological nutrition. That’s when the idea of creating my own company became obvious.

What were the main challenges in developing your project?

My role as an operational and commercial leader has evolved significantly over time, thanks to the support of SquareLab. Initially, I struggled with the idea of selling my services, as it wasn’t my favorite aspect of the job. However, discussions with my mentors helped me overcome this hurdle.

The departure of one of my associates, combined with deep reflection on the opportunities and the time I could dedicate to the project, also played a key role in this evolution.

With the incubator’s support, I took the time to ask myself the right questions: “If in five years, Nutrioo remains the same as it is today, will I be fulfilled?” The answer was clear: no. I now know that I’d rather see the project accelerate or end—I no longer want to stay in limbo!

Which aspects of our support program helped you the most?

Three key aspects of the program stand out for me:

  • Mentor interactions, where I exchanged ideas, received valuable advice, and benefited from their experience.
  • The open space environment, which fosters collaboration, spontaneous discussions, and idea-sharing.
  • Informal moments, like “small talks” around the coffee machine, which help build connections and create a relaxed atmosphere.
Do you think the incubator is helping to strengthen the long-term viability of your project?

Probably, but it’s still a bit early to fully measure the incubator’s long-term impact on my project. That said, I can already see significant benefits: I’ve met key service providers and partners who will play a crucial role in Nutrioo’s growth. Let’s check back in five years for a more complete assessment!

What’s next for you?

Nutrioo’s next steps are ambitious and strategic. We need to pass the Qualiopi certification audit, a crucial step for ensuring the quality of our training programs and accessing new funding opportunities.

We also plan to rebrand Nutrioo to better reflect our vision, values, and market positioning. At the same time, we will launch our first in-person training sessions while working on a major expansion goal: developing our services in Canada!

What advice would you give to someone hesitant about joining SquareLab?

I would say: go for it! Especially if you need structured and reassuring support. SquareLab, as an incubator within a business school, offers an ideal environment for learning. You’ll find a supportive community, accessible mentors, and peers who share the same ambitions and challenges—you’ll never feel alone.
